The government has admitted labour malpractices at the Standard Gauge Railways (SGR). Appearing before the Senate committee on Labour and Social Welfare, Labour Cabinet secretary Ukur Yattani revealed cases of discrimination by expatriate Chinese workers against locals.
Yattani said Chinese workers, for instance, do not use designated smoking zones, unlike their local counterparts. “This exposes workers to second-hand cigarette smoke. There is also inadequate supply of wholesome drinking water for local workers,” he said.
The committee also heard, that, while the China Bridge and Roads Construction Company, which operates the line, has a human resources policy manual, its implementation and compliance with the labour laws and the Constitution is questionable.
