The US Secretary of State, John Kerry visited statehouse on Monday, 22nd. In his much awaited Kenyan visit, Kerry could not hide is ecstasy on the warm welcome given to him by the Foreign Affairs CS, Ms. Amina Mohammed.
While addressing the nation, Mr. Kerry congratulated the Kenyan Olympics team for having shown an impressive performance at Rio. Kerry also lauded the government to continue supporting sports in the country. Mr. Kerry also noted that Kenya has a crucial role to play in addressing climate change.
Mr. Kerry addressed Kenya’s diplomatic concerns including the refugee problem. This is concerning the ongoing refugee repatriation process that is currently going on. “The Repatriation process must be humane”, said the US Secretary of State. Kerry also said that Kenya should support the Somali government in battling the Al-Shabaab and strengthening its reign. He also indicated that the neighboring South Sudan needs Kenya’s hand in stabilizing the country.
Kerry also noted that the US investors are targeting Kenya as a potential investing ground. He, however, indicated that there needs to be a stable political system in the country is Kenya is to grow economically. Mr. Kerry also noted that he is impressed with the current IEBC reforms that are being done in readiness for the next year’s general elections. Kerry is in the country to address the South Sudan crisis among other issues.
